Rolling Forward an Engagement

Rolling forward an engagement creates a new engagement with a new period end for the same client. During roll forward, you can select to update the industry content to the latest version (if a newer version is available) or to use the same version that was in the original engagement. You also can specify whether the responses from the original engagement are kept or reset in the new engagement.

  • Correspondence and other supporting files default to not update so that customizations your firm has made are not lost. Note that if you do choose to update the versions for these files, you cannot select to keep responses.
  • Responses you have made to any correspondence or other supporting files are retained if you select to roll forward without updating the content version. If you choose to update to the latest version, your responses and customizations are not retained.
  • For related forms, if you select to update to the latest version, all the related forms will be set to update to the latest version. The option to keep or reset responses can be set independently for each related form.
  • Sign-offs are cleared at both the form and row level.
  • Notes that you have added to a form are retained only if you have applied the Roll-Forward status to them.
  • If your engagement includes a CCH Axcess AutoCheck checklist, the checklist must be rolled forward separately in AutoCheck.

To roll forward an engagement, do the following:

  1. If you are not already on the Engagement List page, click .
  2. Locate the engagement in the list.
  3. Click in the Actions column for the engagement, and then select Roll Forward.
  4. If needed, edit the engagement name.
  5. If needed, enter or select a different period end date for the new engagement. The period end date defaults to the same date, one year later, from the original engagement.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Under Existing Title, if needed, select the version of the industry title you want to use for the new engagement. You can only select an option here if the title in the original engagement is not the latest version.

    Note: You can update your engagement to the same year title or to the next year title. You cannot skip title years.

  8. Under Form List, select roll forward options for each form.
    • Roll Forward Setting. If there is an updated version of the form, select whether to roll forward the version in the original engagement or to replace it with the updated version.
    • Responses. Select whether your responses in each form for the original engagement should be rolled forward or if the responses should be reset.
  9. Click Roll Forward.
